VISION FOR 2005 The vision for Outreach through Leaside United Church is guided by the principles of loving and serving others and of helping those in need. In 2005, this shall include sustaining support for established partnerships with certain ongoing organizations and projects. Our Outreach shall also strive to be open to the call to serve when new needs arise. This year, we hope to help members and adherents to understand and to increase support for the Mission and Service Fund and the World Development Fund of the United Church of Canada. Monthly Minute-For-Mission persons will share some of the many local, national and international examples of the vital work empowered by these funds. On-going support for affordable housing and homeless issues shall continue. The groundbreaking for Lester B. Pearson Place started on February 28, 2005! Terrific progress is being made to date and pictorial updates shall be posted on the Leaside United Church web-site www.leaside.org. We shall hear of and be invited to the official opening ceremonies, anticipated to be in May or June of this year. The Out-of-the-Cold Programs at both Eastminster and Newtonbrook United Churches shall be central to the vision in 2005. We sincerely thank and hope that the faithful Leaside volunteers and supporters continue, to let their lights shine. Also, our vision is to continue to purchase toques from Raising-the Roof. This organization promotes a national affordable housing program and offers financial support for local service organizations.
Refugee Resettlement in 2005 shall include the welcome of the six Anton family members to Canada. This Iraqi family has been sponsored by our church since November 2003 and is currently awaiting immigration approval while living in Greece as non-status refugees. It is also vital that continued support is available to the many Leaside-sponsored refugee families currently in Canada.
In May and June 2005, the outreach at Leaside Church focuses on assistance for Camp Scugog. Camp Scugog is a United Church - owned camp that provides uplifting and often, life-altering experiences for families and youth. Support, in the form of donated practical items and also, money for sponsorship of camp staff and programs, has been an ongoing Outreach Program of our church for more than five years. The Leaders – in – Training (L.I.T.) program costs $750 per person for this summer and traditionally, Leaside Church has been able to support 3 or 4 of these young people.
The 2005 Camp Scugog Wishlist includes running shoes, women’s clothing and swimsuits, all sizes of running shoes, blankets, sheets, games, personal care products, Mountain and BMX bikes, elbow and knee pads and new bike helmets. More items may be required and any donated things may be placed in the large red Outreach box outside the Church Office during May and June. Monetary donations may be made to the Local Outreach Fund of the multi-purpose pew envelope or by writing Camp Scugog on the blank line of the regular offering envelope.
The Outreach Committee plans to offer continued support for:
Enoch Udofia, Principal of Alta Academy, Nigeria,
Rev., Dr. Bryan Lapier, and the Echo Bay Pastoral Charge near Sault Ste. Marie, and
Thorncliffe P.S. (remember to save your children’s reading books for June of this year).
As well, we are planning to help John Farquahson, who works at an established Prosthesis Program in Tanzania.
We recognize that the outreach of this church supports people with a myriad of needs. It is our hope and our prayer that the members of this serving community shall continue to share generously and gratefully their talents and resources in the outreach work of Leaside United Church.
