OUTREACH IN ACTION AT LEASIDE

There is much need and imbalance in our world. We are blessed with much in our developed societies, and as Christians, we are called to share proportionately to that which we have been given.

After Christmas, the world was stunned by the unimaginable destruction of the earthquake and tsunamis in Southeast Asia. And yet, almost immediately, people and thier governments everywhere responded to this tragedy with an outpouring of support unmatched in many decades of human history.

The United Church of Canada is also offering support through ACT (Action Churches Together), the organization that directs church-donated aid to well-established local personnel and agencies in the devastated regions. Please continue to support the affected people and countries by donating through your church offering envelope and mark Tsunami Relief or by giving to one of the well-publicized and established aid agencies like The Canadian Red Cross, etc.

As a result of the support of Leaside United Church during the Advent White Gift Appeal, the Outreach Committee was able to send:

  • (a) significant, monetary support to Rev. Dr. Bryan Lapier for Echo Bay Pastoral Charge near Sault Ste Marie, where 20 family hampers brightened Christmas for the recipients.
  • (b) monetary help and practical, personal personal items to the Out-ot-the-Cold Programs at Eastminster and at Newtonbrook United Churches
  • (c) financial assistance to Touchstone Youth Centre, Massey Centre (teen moms) and the YMCA's East York Women's Shelter (abused women), and
  • (d) ssufficient monetary help to enable the staff of Thorncliffe Park Public School to purchase 8 to 10 listening centres, so that school families ,may borrow them and listen to recorded books to learn English together.

Outreach needs in our communities, whether they are international, national or local, are clearly present, urgent and our Christian calling.

Leaside continues to offer on-going help by purchasing the following items that are available weekly, after church or from the Church office.

ITEM Cost Organization Time Line
Friendship Broaches $10 NUC-TUCT Non Profit Homes Corp On-going
Hasty Notes $10 NUC-TUCT Non-Profit Homes Corp. On-going
Beads of Hope $20 U.C. of Canada On-going

During January and February, we are collecting new or gently-used mitts, gloves, winter hats and scarves. These donated items will be sorted and shared, according to sizes and needs, between Thorncliffe Park Public School and the two Out-of-the-Cold programs noted previously.

Our ongoing support is needed, appreciated and vital to the lives of many! Let us continue to share our gifts and to offer our assistance.

On Wednesday March 2, your Outreach Committee will sponsor a Travelogue. This will begin with co p.m. and will be held in the gymnasium. Proceeds will be in support of Tsunami Relief. raising $3800 to support affordable housing initiatives. Thank you for your support.
